Choosing a Shade Sail Color: Shade sails come in a variety of colors to match your style and needs; however, the color of your shade is not just a decision for aesthetic reasons. Choosing certain colors can have an effect on the UV rating as well as how much light passes underneath the shade.

Lighter color shade sails will reflect more sunlight. Since shade itself will not absorb the heat of the sun as quickly, the area directly around the shade will not be as affected by the radiated heat coming from the shade. Popular Lighter Colors – White, bright colors (yellow, lime green etc) neutral colors

Darker color shade sails will absorb more heat and light, rather than reflecting it.

However, the material doesn’t really retain the heat.

It will cool easily just with the flow of air up through the mesh.  Popular Darker Colors – Black, dark grey, brown, blue.

So, while lighter colors have a lower shade factor (it is brighter underneath them) compared to darker colors of the same material.

When light hits a lighter color, the higher reflection causes the surface to appear brighter, with more glare, that can then make seeing through the shade harder.

In fact, if you wish to see through your shade, to admire a particular view for example, then a darker color may be more suitable.

It is important to note that in addition to how much sunlight passes through and is absorbed by the various colors, shade sails come in a variety of fabrics and variations including flame retardant and with microbial treatment.

Also, some of the fabrics will release VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) which may make them unsuitable for use in commercial spaces, schools, and health care facilities.
