Ripstop is a light woven fabric made from nylon or polyester, that is known for its high durability.

Ripstop fabric is coated with a nanotechnology film called PU (polyurethane). PU allows for the ripstop to be waterproof, withstanding all types of water exposures.

Advantages of ripstop are the favorable strength-to-weight ratio and that small tears can not easily spread. Fibers used to make ripstop include cotton, silk, polyester, and polypropylene, with nylon content often limited to the crosshatched threads that make it tear-resistant.

What is the difference between ripstop nylon and ripstop polyester?

Nylon Ripstop is more costly, but it feels softer and more elastic. Polyester ripstop is both more durable and less expensive. Polyester Ripstop is more heat resistant than nylon. Polyester Ripstop is UV resistant and holds its colour far longer than nylon ripstop

NB: Why is it called ripstop?

Most people assume that this weave has something to do with stopping rips from occurring. It doesn’t. What it does is stop rips from spreading once they begin. In technical terms, ripstop prevents a tear from fully breaking the structure of the fabric.
