Ripstop is a popular fabric in the textile world. From 1.9oz Nylon Ripstop, 65/35 Poly/Cotton Ripstop, and 420D Nylon Ripstop there are a lot of options available to find the right fit for your project. For those who may not be familiar with ripstop, it’s a type of woven fabric that uses a special reinforcing technique that stops rips from spreading once they begin. Hence, the name “ripstop”.
During weaving, some reinforcement yarns are woven in a crosshatch pattern to give the fabric the appearance it has – making it a more functional, aesthetic, and visually striking fabric. When a tear starts, it cannot tear anymore due to these reinforcement yarns stopping the rip in its tracks. Not sure if your fabric is a ripstop? Just look for the square pattern on the fabric’s surface.
